News for August 2004

Yep, it's finally out. And it's full of new stuff. English search is infinitely better. Updates are now readable and easy to understand, and... well, it's better. Check it out.

I added the Troubleshooting page to help with the most common problems that I've seen so far.

The next version is under way, so it'll be out next month or so.

The Palm version is under possible development...

Well, the bandwidth here is needed for work, so I removed most of the links to any file more than a few kilobytes in size. The Comcast mirrors all still work, so get the mirrored versions of things if you want them. This'll be fixed around 5pm. Sorry.

And it looks like there was a wee little problem with the documentation, so I fixed that, added some stuff, and re-packaged as 1.0.5.

Finally! JLookUp 1.0.4 is released!

There's a ton of new stuff in this one, including threaded searches and loads to keep it from looking like it locked up. There's a Windows 98 version, and it can get information about updates about itself!

I managed to fix the 'classical' dictionary, but 'lawgledt' has no hope. You can get it under 'edict.supplement.2004.08.15.zip' on the Download page.

While I was working on the Windows 98 (and consequently, '95, 'ME, etc.) version, I found a few things to change, which cascaded into a ton of things to change, so instead of just putting up the '98 version, I'm going to put up the next version of both types when they're ready.

New features will include:
* Threading (so you won't have to have the program freeze while it's loading stuff; so you can cancel searches if you want)
* 30% move space-efficient index files.
* Super-fast index file loading.
* Maybe: much faster English searching...?
* More options.

And while I'm here, I might as well warn you guys. After some intense testing, I have found that the following dictionaries are NOT correct and that they WILL screw up JLookUp:
* lawgledt (the legal-terms glossary)
* classical (the classical Japanese dictionary)--but I think that I patched this one up.

Okay! I spent the last few days fighting with the Windows SDK, and I finally have something to show for it other than a bad headache and a few empty cans of soda! If anyone wants to help me out and test out the new version for Windows 98 (and probably 95; definitely ME), be my guest. It should also work with XP and NT. You can get it here:

It seems as if JLookUp doesn't want to work on my Windows 98 machine... of course, that machine is 100% trash, but it should still run... so, it looks like compatibility is a bit down...

So... the non-XP version is in development!

I was just checking on the tracker's stats, and JLookUp has been downloaded 842 times; I think that that's pretty good for its first try in the Torrent Realm. It even got this nice comment:
