Well, if something doesn't work, I'm sorry.
From experience, the biggest problems are problems with the EDICT files. If there's an extra '/' or something, it'll really screw things up. Your best bet is to take it out and see if that fixes it. If it does, you'll have to fix the file yourself. Also--this is important--delete the .jli index file for the bad dictionary. Those things can get really messed up when a dictionary is bad.
If that's not your problem, try deleting Options.jlreg. That will reset all of the options. Sometimes an option goes bad and ruins everything for everyone.
From what I've seen, a lot of problems are font problems. For example, I take it for granted that you have MS Mincho, MS Gothic, Arial, and Arial Unicode MS installed. If you don't then don't panic. Just go to Options-->Settings and fix it. You can also do it manually via 'Options.jlreg' if it's giving you a really bad time.
